Everything You Need to Know From Last Nights VGAs

Once again gamers looked on as the world got to see an insight into the gaming scene, and with that come cringes. Zachery Levi, was decent enough but some of the bits were just cringeworthy. Nevertheless the show was an improvement on last year’s but even though it was an award show, six awards were crammed into a small video montage in the middle of the show. It had its highpoints like Miyamoto receiving Zelda being inducted into the video game hall of fame, then it had some low-points with Charlie Sheen barely even showing up.

Anyway, here are the things you need to know from last night:

The Last of Us is a survival game from Naughty Dog

It was possibly the reveal everyone was waiting for. There was talk all week because it was a game being developed by someone you wouldn’t believe. In the end, it’s a first party game being developed by a first party developer. Not seeing the “wouldn’t believe” part. Still the game looks fantastic. Naughty Dog, developers of the Uncharted series are going in a new direction with a game all about surviving a deadly fungus. The trailer followed two characters called Joel and Ellie. It was revealed that this game has been in development for three years now by a second team at Naughty Dog. Keep your  eyes peeled for this one.

Epic’s new IP is cartoony, called “Fortnite”

Cliff Blezinski took to the stage to announce a brand new IP from Epic Games. What he showed was, well, unexpected. The game is about scavenging, collecting, and protecting. It looks pretty interesting and the visual aesthetic is different but really good.

Tony Hawk HD coming Summer 2012

After the poor showing from Tony Hawk games in recent years, it seems like Activision are going back to the start, like, right back to the start. The new game announced will be released on PSN and XBLA and is a HD remake of sorts destined for summer release. The game will feature levels from the first two games, and chances are will be going back to the controller play-style.

Alan Wake returns in an American Nightmare

Alan Wake was quite possibly one of the most underrated games of recent years. Part of that was due to the extra long development cycle but looks like we won’t be waiting five years for a sequel; in, fact, it’s just a couple of months away. It has been speculated that this new episodic downloadable game will start the be rolled out early 2012 which is in the next few months. Alan Wake: American Nightmare will be available through download only.

Bioware developing Command and Conquer Generals 2

Promised as one of the biggest reveals of the night, Mass Effect developers Bioware unveiled that one of their studios is working on Command and Conquer Generals 2. What is possibly the most interesting aspect is that fact that the game will be running on DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine. Keep your eyes on this one, it could be very interesting indeed.

The “truth” about Metal Gear Rising revealed

Hideo Kojima took to the stage and announced that a new developer is behind the helm of the game now known as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. The game is now being developed by Platinum games and is quite the different beast we witness a couple of years ago. The Bayonetta developer seems to have put its stamp on the franchise with it now looking more fast-paced and action oriented. Unfortunately it seems like the “cut everything” aesthetic is now absent. Still, with an incredible developer in charge, the game is set to be great.
